Chapter One - Southside

Chapter One is called Southside because this area was the center of our world in the late 60s and early to mid 70s. Outside of high school, this is where we all met, gathered, partied, and socialized. Southside was the hippie community of our city and the home of our favorite hangouts; places such as UAB, Freedom House, Alethia House, Loveman House, the Cadillac Cafe, the Cornerstone, Avondale Park, Liberty Park, Five Points, all of Ron Yount's haunted houses, Campus Life, Morris Ave (ok, that one's a stretch) and, of course, Papa Joe's, which was not in Southside, but it was one of our favorite hot spots.

We also spent a lot of time at the IHOP and the Pitt Grill in those days, drinking coffee and smoking lots of cigarettes, because they were open 24 hours (both of which are also not in Southside). They're on the list because we frequented these establishments quite often. None of us were big drinkers back then, so we spent our time in late night fast food chains or in the "parent free" homes of certain friends; especially when we were all still in high school.
