Southside Bands & the Music of Our Gang

The bands that were born in Southside and the surrounding communities created and played some of the best music on this continent. Some of them almost made it, some faded away ~  but many are still around playing great tunes for grateful fans. And even though some of the legendary bands disappeared, the musicians are still out there playing music and making history.

The rock groups I remember most clearly are Black Mountain,  Warm, Telluride, Rainbow, the Undead, and... They played all over the city for all occasions, but the best times were always outside at places such as Avondale Park, the Quad at UAB, and on the lawns at Montevallo. I also remember several concerts in the stadiums at the University in Tuscaloosa, Jacksonville State, and Auburn.

The Bluegrass groups I recall most are the Front Porch String Band, Three On a String, and ... I used to work at a bluegrass bar on Morris Ave called Oak Street; a club that hosted some of the best bluegrass music in the country. And when I got married at the Botanical Gardens in Mountain Brook, the Front Porch String Band played at my wedding reception.
